The Art and Skill of Self-Empathy: Just in time for the holidays!

With Kate Kendrick

Saturday mornings 9:30 am to 12:30pm, November 17 and November 24, 2012

Class Description: The ability to empathize with ourselves is at the heart of the Nonviolent Communication (TM) process. Without self-empathy, we can not engage in authentic and effective dialogue. Self-empathy assists us to understand ourselves and our values more deeply, communicate more effectively, live more compassionately and experience peace whether or not our needs are met by others. Drawing on the work of Dr. Marshall Rosenberg and CNVC trainers Robert Gonzalez, this 6 hour training will focus on NVC self-empathy skills and processes. There will be a strong emphasis on developing the ability to learn to connect to our needs as living energy rather than as mental concepts.

Format: Games, partner and small group activities, discussion and closed eye processes.

What others have said about Kate’s trainings:

“Kate Kendrick’s ongoing workshop is helping me express what I really want and need much more easily, yet without making any demands. Much more often now, I talk to my husband, even about the most difficult things, in a way that makes both of us feel good, feel like we’re being real, feel like we’re being heard. In the end, we’re both getting what we need. It works with other people too. Kate knows how to help!” Silvine Farnell, poetry consultant; www.DeeperIntoPoetry.com

“Kate is not only a good teacher, but she really lives the values and principles of Nonviolent Communication. The training was truly an experiential education of NVC led by Kate’s example.” Amanda Mahan, Program/Volunteer Manager, Teaching Peace

“The exercises were well thought out. I learned so much from them both about myself and about the process.” Tilli Urban, Administrative Assistant, National Jewish Health

Trainer: Kate Kendrick, M.A. Kate is a psychotherapist, empathic coach and trainer. She has had extensive training in Nonviolent Communication™ (NVC) with Marshall Rosenberg, Robert Gonzalez and Susan Skye and has been integrating this approach into her personal and professional life for over 25 years. In addition she holds a Master’s in Applied Psychology from the University of Santa Monica and has studied Inner Relationship Focusing. Kate also brings her extensive training and experience in counseling, restorative justice, conflict resolution, and elementary education to her work.

with Kate Kendrick

Wednesdays, October 24, 31, November 7, 14, 28, December 5, 12

“The more faithfully you listen to the voice within you, the better you will hear what is happening outside.” -Dag Hammarskjold

Description: Based on Nonviolent Communication™developed by Marshall Rosenberg, this training is for those familiar with the basics of Nonviolent Communication™ and who would like support in embodying the NVC consciousness in daily life. Drawing on body awareness practices, Inner Relationship Focusing and the work of CNVC trainers Robert Gonzalez and Susan Skye, we will emphasize developing our ability to focus our intention and attention on the living energy within needs, the heart of the NVC process. There also will be a strong emphasis on self-empathy as the foundation for being able to express authentically and empathize compassionately. Training activities include: presentations; full group, small group and dyad exercises and games, guided awareness processes and dance floors.

Requested Experience: At least 12 hours of basic NVC training and familiarity with the first 8 chapters of Marshall Rosenberg’s book, Nonviolent Communication.

Information or Register: Contact Kate at k.kendrick@mac.com or 303-485-9428

Trainer: Kate Kendrick, MA, was first introduced to Nonviolent Communication in 1986 by Marshall Rosenberg and has studied and integrated this approach into her personal and professional life ever since. She has facilitated trainings based on NVC in Colorado since 1999. Kate currently is part of the Rocky Mountain Center for Compassionate Communication team of facilitators and is co-organizer of the Family Heart Camp of the Rockies (www.familyheartcamp-rockies.org). In addition to her Nonviolent Communication training, Kate has training and experience in counseling, restorative justice, mediation, Inner Relationship Focusing and elementary education. She has a psychotherapy practice in Longmont and has been married to her husband of 17 years.

Kate’s trainings are helping me express what I really want and need much more easily, yet without making any demands. Much more often now, I talk to my husband, even about the most difficult things, in a way that makes both of us feel good, feel like we’re being real, feel like we’re being heard. In the end, we’re both getting what we need. It works with other people too. Kate knows how to help!” Silvine Farnell, poetry consultant and founder of Deeper into Poetry, www.DeeperintoPoetry.com.

About Nonviolent Communication™ Nonviolent Communication focuses our attention on compassion as our motivation, rather than fear, guilt, blame or shame. It emphasizes improving the quality of our relationships as our goal and taking personal responsibility for our choices. It is effective even when the other person or group is not familiar with this process.

Saturday November 3rd

Understanding how we think is more potent than understanding what we think.

What is Spiral Dynamics?

Spiral Dynamics is a powerful research based developmental model that maps the different values and thinking systems that are the basis upon which people, organizations, and cultures make their decisions and choices.

Learn how this evolutionary model of human development can help you understand the complex world we live in.

Gain insight into navigating the complex challenges we encounter in our daily lives.

Based on the research of Clare W. Graves, Spiral Dynamics describes how waves of consciousness emerge and flow through and groups. It describes bio-psycho-social systems along a continuum that manifest as expanding spirals.

Saturday November 10th

Often our usual response to bullying behavior is to make it stop immediately and punishment for “the bully”. While this is essential to create a safe and caring setting, bullying behavior often continues if you do not develop a more preventative and comprehensive program. Come learn ideas and skills to grow a healthy, respectful and compassionate environment: Identify four levels of bullying behavior; activities to teach empathy & compassion, using Compassionate Communication (based on Nonviolent Communication work of Marshall Rosenberg); inspire with multicultural stories; learn inclusive strategies; and understand different needs and strengths of Four Social Partners. Learn, practice and gain support in our Community of Practice. For Early Childhood Professionals, Parents, Teachers, and anyone who works with young children.
Forgiveness is a life-giving process to support healing of self and relationships.

We often become stuck in our own “prison” of anger, shame or guilt. Forgiveness is an intentional process that allows us to reconcile, repair and restore our life story towards greater well being ~ for self, family and communal life. Find presence, understanding and interconnectedness that supports your mourning, relief, and even celebration of letting go of confusion, pain and grudges.

Moving between Narrow Mind (mochin d’katnut) and Spacious Mind (mochin d’gadlut): Drawing upon these Jewish concepts, we will explore how we live between and in these two worlds

Compassionate Communication, as a spiritual practice, to find light of self & others: Holding the life-giving energy of both our needs and the needs of others

You can attend one or both of these activities.
1:00 – 2:00 pm Gentle Yoga (please bring a mat & blanket)
2:15 – 6:00 pm Workshop

Come learn how to hold these natural points of tension and paradoxes we have in our lives.

An Introduction to Compassionate (Non-violent) Communication (NVC)

Grounded in compassion and the universality of human needs, NVC helps transform patterns of communication that often lead to conflict or disconnection from ourselves and others. Please join our RMCCC facilitators for a 3-hour workshop exploring how NVC can help you:

Better understand people’s motivations, including your own, so that you can live more happily and compassionately with others.

Develop skills for communicating hard to hear messages in ways that build connection, trust, and community instead of stimulating defensiveness and disconnection from others.

Let go of assumptions, dissolve barriers to understanding, and find solutions that work for everyone.

Increase your sense of well-being, peace of mind, and happiness.

Learn how NVC can improve and enrich your relationships with family, friends, colleagues and co-workers!

This Month’s Facilitators: David Steele and Maria Bailey
